Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood(AHC) is an intractable disease that shows disturbance of consciousness, alternately paralysis of limbs. Clinical and scientific researches have also tried to clarify the cause of this disease, but they have not succeeded yet. Flunarizine, a Ca^<2+> channel blocker but novel remedy of AHC, excluded from clinical use by its extrapyramidal side effects that occurred in stroke patients. In the present study, to re-evaluate the drug in its central effect, several behavioral pharmacological experiments were applied using rats. Then, to verify the effect on the AHC of flunarizine, conflict action, spontaneous motor activity, blood pressure, convulsion, passive avoidance, righting reflex and the pain were examined from a neuropsychopharmacology viewpoint in this research. As a result, the influence is not shown in the reflection for spontaneous motor activity, blood pressure, convulsion, passive avoidance, righting reflex and pain though the improvement action of conflict action and a part of convulsion. It was suggested that anti-convulsion action, anxiolytic effect, and improvement action of disturbance of consciousness, but not muscle relaxant, contribute to AHC.
