The conventional access network typically comprises passive optical network (PON) systems and layer-2 switches (L2SWs) to aggregate the data traffic and feed it to the core network. The high aggregation ratio realized by this two-stage aggregation enables operators to offer Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) services economically since cost of optical fibers and equipments in the central office are shared among a number of users. Until now, we proposed the wide-area photonic aggregation using -tunable Wavelength-division -multiplexing / time-division-multiplexing- (WDM/TDM-) PON, to reduce the power consumption for aggregation in access network. With this approach, the aggregation function and the redundancy function of L2SWs in the conventional access networks are achieved by installing the photonic aggregator into the PON. In this paper, we quantitatively investigate the effectiveness of power reduction and the region where services can be offered with the photonic aggregator. In addition, we describe the dynamic load-balancing for aggregated traffic realized by our proposed wide-area photonic aggregation.
