A New Wave Monitoring System on the Ocean Platform "Compass"

A new wave monitoring system was developed to meet a need for measuring waves wife good accuracy on floating structures such as large buoys, semi-submersible oil rigs and platforms operating in the ocean. The first system was installed on the CRL (Communications Research Laboratory) platform "COMPASS", which is operating 40 km off Iriomote Island of Okinawa and observing current and waves to obtain the sea-truth-data for the long-range ocean radar developed by Okinawa Subtropical Environment Remote-Sensing Center of CRL. This paper presents the outline of the COMPASS and the newly developed wave monitoring system. The emphasis is on the principle of wave measurements and the model experiment, which was carried out to confirm the validity of the system. We also show some of the measured data.
