A Novel Synthesis Process and Characterization of Well-Crystallized Li1+xMn2-xO4 Spinels

Well-crystallized lithium manganospinels Li1+xMn2-xO4(0≤x≤0.333) were prepared from the stoichiometric mixture of LiOAc and Mn(NO3)2. The crystallites appear to be single crystals with a size of 0.1-2.0μm in the SEM micrographs. The lattice parameter and manganese occupancy at 16d sites in the space group Fd3̄m were found to be sensitive to both the synthesis temperature and the composition of the spinels (Li/Mn ratio), as a result of the variation in manganese valency. Samples with a lower x (x≤0.125) show good electrode performance for the cell Li/Li1+xMn2-xO4 in the 4V region, whereas Li4Mn5O12 (x=0.333) spinels show good cyclability with a rechargeable capacity of over 100mAh/g in the 3V region.
