We have found a new elementary reaction process for the H(g) + D(a) system: a H(g) atom (Tgas=1800 K) impinging on the D-saturated Pd(100) surface (Tsurf=105 K) forces a preadsorbed D(a) atom to be absorbed into the bulk. Neither direct absorption of H(g) nor abstraction was observed. The mechanism of the absorption is discussed, and a "stamping" model is proposed. A marked difference in the reaction selectivity with the results previously reported for Cu and Ni surfaces is discussed in terms of the peculiarity of the potential energy surface and dynamics of the H2/M system.
