The age and growth of the lizardfish Saurida sp. 1 (Japanese name: Kuroeso), collected in the East China Sea from April 1998 to March 2000, were examined using polished thin sections of otolith. Length-frequency distributions clearly showed differences in the range of sizes between the sexes. All specimens larger than 400 mm in fork length were females. Monthly changes in the frequency of appearance of a translucent band on the outer margin of the otolith, and in the marginal increments, indicate that ring marks form once a year, from December to March. Male specimens had 1-9 ring marks, while females had 1-11 ring marks. Using the back-calculated fork lengths, the growth of male lizardfish was expressed as FLt = 421.7(1 - exp{-0.162(t + 1.238)})(1 ≤ t ≤ 8) and that of females as FLt = 489.4(1 - exp{-0.160(t + 0.948)}) (1 ≤ t ≤ 10). Our results suggest that females grow faster and live longer than males. A discussion of the summary of scale to age determination in lizardfish is carried out.
