Analyses of neutral particle penetration and particle confinement in JT-60U

In order to understand particle confinement properties, the particle balance in JT-60U has been quantitatively analyzed. The charged particle source due to the ionization of hydrogen atoms penetrating into the main plasma was estimated based on measurements of the emission intensity at the Balmer alpha line combined with a simulation using a Monte-Carlo neutral particle transport code. The analyses were performed systematically for the L- and H-mode plasmas of JT-60U, and a data of the global particle confinement time was obtained. It was found that (1) the dependence of the particle confinement time on the averaged electron density and (2) the correlation of the particle confinement time and energy confinement time were different for different operating conditions.
