Mechanized longwall is a necessity for working deeper areas with adverse roof conditions and high loads on supports in coal mines. For achieving improved safety, conservation, higher level of performance and low cost production longwall mining is the only method of extraction. However, a difficult caving characteristics of overlying strata has been experienced in majority of longwall faces in India. The experimental longwall panel was partially located under a lake. The roof condition was bad due to formation of severe cavities on the face. As a result, the face operations were disturbed and the progress was poor. In addition, the chock shields performance was not appreciable because of bad roof conditions. The productivity and safety of the longwall operations were severely disturbed. Therefore, the authors successfully indigenously developed and commissioned the innovative RT (real time) system for problematic longwall faces for continuous analysis and forecasting of strata behaviour and chock shield performance in real time. Thus, the RT system helped the mine management to successful operate the longwall face under such a bad roof conditions. This paper presents an overview and impact of real time analysis on successful longwall face under bad roof conditions.
