Anomalous elastohydrodynamic films of fatty alcohols in circular contacts

    There is growing attention to shape variations of elastohydrodynamic films owing to shear motion. In light of this, the film shape was studied using several fatty alcohols to understand the mechanism of anomalous film shapes. The disc and ball were surrounded in a chamber to maintain the lubricant and control the ambient temperature during experiments. 1-Decanol, 1-tetradecanol, and 1-docecanol were used as lubricants. The color changed locally before the zone with increasing slide-to-roll ratio for 1-decanol. The change in the color indicated that the film thickness increased. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the 2009 World Tribology Congress (Kyoto, Japan 9/6-11/2009).
