Applicability of an ACM type corrosion sensor to evaluations of corrosive environments in gas piping

It is important to devise a method of predicting the time-dependent corrosion behavior of structural steel members in order to ensure the safety of structures. However, there is currently no established method of predicting corrosion behavior in a wide variety of corrosive environments. In our previous research, a method for evaluating the corrosion behavior of unpainted steel plates using an atmospheric corrosion monitor (ACM) sensor was proposed. This method has been confirmed to be effective in high chloride environments. However, corrosion behavior in high carbon dioxide environments cannot currently be evaluated. Thus, the purpose of this study was to clarify the difference between the ACM output characteristics in chloride and carbon dioxide environments, and to investigate the application of ACM corrosion sensors to high carbon dioxide atmospheres. Exposure tests were carried out on unpainted steel plate inside plumbing in the Kobe Steel manufacturing plant. In addition, the environment was monitored using ACM sensors.
