Applicability of modified drift flux model for 3-D channel bubbly flow with a rod inserted

In order to develop analytical tools for the analyses of 3-D two-phase flow in channels with obstacles, the modified drift flux model has been applied. Numerical simulations of 3-D gas-liquid two-phase flow in a channel with a rod inserted to simulate a simple sub-channel in the fuel bundle were carried out. Analytical results were compared with experiments, to show the validity of the modified drift flux model. Experiments were carried out with using an apparatus of 3-D vertical rectangular duct with a vertically inserted rod. Nitrogen gas - water adiabatic two phase flow was circulated upward in the duct. The apparatus was made of acrylic resin plates and the rod inserted was a glass tube to make the flow inside visualized. The two-phase flow pattern was recorded with a high-speed video camera and the mass flow rate of nitrogen gas was measured with a digital gas-mass flow meter. The comparisons between the experimental results and the numerical ones showed good agreements, thus the model was verified to indicate the possibility of the model to be applied to flows in more complex geometry with obstacles.
