Application of ionic liquids to solvent extraction

    In this article, we summarized recent advances in liquid-liquid extraction using ionic liquids as an alternative to conventional organic solvents. Ionic liquids have attracted much attention due to their unique properties as novel green solvents. In many cases, improvement of the extraction efficiency and sometimes selectivity was enhanced in metal extraction systems by using ionic liquids. In most ionic liquid extraction, the extraction mechanism is considerably differed from that in conventional organic solvents. The solubility limitation of conventional extractants often prevents a wide range of application of ionic liquids to solvent extraction. A few extractants have been designed for tionic liquid extraction and showed a good performance in the extraction of such metals as Ag+, Sr2+ and Cs+. Ionic liquid extraction was also applied to the removal of organic environmental contaminants from water or oils. Examples of biomolecular extraction using ionic liquids have significantly increased. Protein extraction was first reported quite recently by using a cyclic ligand crown ether.
