N1 - Funding Information: Our research group of biodiversity and conservation biogeography (BCB Japan) aims to bridge between local‐scale ecological studies and the concepts/theories of biogeography and macroecology. We use a variety of datasets (vegetation plots, forest dynamics plots, species distribution, phylogeny, functional traits and fossils) and statistical models including mechanistic null models. For a detailed understanding of biodiversity patterns, especially those in Asia, we investigate hierarchical assembly processes through time and space across local communities, regional‐scale assemblages and global‐scale biomes (Kubota, Kusumoto, Shiono, & Tanaka, ; Kubota, Kusumoto, Shiono, & Ulrich, , ; Kubota, Shiono, & Kusumoto, ; Shiono, Kusumoto, Yasuhara, & Kubota, ) and also focus on spatial conservation prioritization to develop protected areas network in Asia (Kusumoto et al., ; Lehtomäki et al., ). Our work motivated us to develop a worldwide research network (Figure ) and we run collaborative projects supported by the Program for Advancing Strategic International Networks to Accelerate the Circulation of Talented Researchers, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and the Environment Research and Technology Development Fund (4–1501 and 4–1802) of the Ministry of the Environment, Japan. International collaborations promote the exploration of biodiversity patterns and processes across different spaces, times and taxa including terrestrial and marine organisms and allow us the opportunity to plan this Special Feature in Ecological Research.
