We examined AHH activity in 40 Yusho patients in 1984-1985 and studied the relationship of enzyme activity to severity of skin symptoms, or concentration of PCBs in the blood. Basal and 3-methylcholanthrene (MC)-induced AHH activities and induction ratio (MC-induced/basal) in the patients were not statistically different from those in healthy people. However, basal AHH activity was significantly correlated with dermatological severity in those examined in 1969-1972 and not correlated with those examined in 1973-1978 and in 1981-1984. We observed no correlation between MC-induced AHH activity or induction ratio and dermatological severity in those three periods. Basal and MC-induced AHH activities showed significant positive correlation with concentration of PCBs in the blood in 1976 and not with concentration of PCBs in 1984. These results may indicate that in man, as well as in mice, individual susceptibility to PCDFs (PCBs) is influenced by the degree of AHH activity.
