The steam power plant is a system that converts the chemical energy of fuel into electrical energy. The heat balance approach has conventionally been employed to provide information on the improvement of performance, which may be attained by increasing the useful energy or decreasing the energy loss. In this paper, availability accounting for a steam power plant is explained in contrast to the conventional heat balance or energy balance. Then, availability accounting is performed for a modern steam power plant. The effective use of thermal energy by examining the information obtained from the availability accounting is presented.
