Balancing wedge action in textured converging bearings

    This study investigates a hydrodynamic lubrication mechanism of textured surfaces, termed €balancing wedge action€, found in pivoted pad bearings. The analytical model is a one-dimensional pivoted pad bearing having a single dimple on the pad and considers the equilibrium of the moment applied to the surfaces. The results show that incorporation of a dimple on the pad surface changes the convergence ratio, improving the load capacity without negative pressure. The trends of load and friction in terms of the dimple depth and location are complex depending on the pivot position. The dimple locations at the outlet side, center, and inlet could improve tribological performance.
