When making clear the present our country woodland situation and planning the sustainable forestry and conservation scheme, it is necessary to survey the existing forest type, growth, structure and distribution. This research examined the possibility to get the listed information from aerial photographs. As sample stands, eleven broad-leaved forests were surveyed in the Aburayama Community Forest, Fukuoka, Kyushu, on crown size of canopy trees, tree height diameter at breast height, species composition and structure of all upper 2m layer. To compare with the field survey data and to examine the stand history, the latest and former taken aerial photographs were also inspected. The results are as follows: Analyzing the tree-crown diameters on each photograph from 1945 to 1998, the last harvesting in all stands is estimated around 1936. Although majority stands succeeded to broad-leaved evergreen forest as the climax, red-pine forest, broad-leaved deciduous forest and mixed forest are partly found according to the topography and slope direction. The height digital data based on orthophoto in 1998 was estimated by field survey data, and it became apparent of their utilization and limit. From the results, it is considered that there is a possibility to get the information from the aerial photograph about the current forest situation and dynamics.
