Beach changes triggered by the construction of detached breakwaters in the pocket beach of 3.8 km length were investigated, taking the Tojo and Maebara :oasts in Kamogawa City in Chiba Prefecture as the example. Shoreline changes were analyzed through the comparison of aerial photographs taken in between 1966 and 1998. Measurements of foreshore slope and sampling test of foreshore materials were carried out. Calm wave zones were formed behind the detached breakwaters and this induced longshore sand transport from outside to the lee side of the detached breakwaters. Fine sand was selectively washed away to form steep slope in the zone far from the detached breakwaters, whereas in the lee side of the detached breakwaters fine sand accumulated to form very gentle slope.
