Four samples of ormosil were prepared with the following constituents: Tetraethoxysilane, poly(dimethylsiloxane), HCl, calcium nitrate and water. The samples varied in their constituent concentrations, one being Ca free. They were processed into test pieces, immersed in simulated body fluid (SBF) for 30 days, dried and analyzed using thin film X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy. The ion concentration in the SBF was also monitored. Bioactivity was observed in the three Ca containing samples and was found to increase with decreasing HCl and Ca concentrations. The effect of Ca ions cannot be ruled out, however, for the Ca free sample exhibited no bioactivity.
