Planar channelling of swift ions in bent single crystals is studied theoretically, and the origin of the bulk capture (or volume capture) effect is discussed. It is concluded that bulk capture occurs at the position where the curvature of the channel decreases. Based on the calculated probabilities for bulk capture, the possibility of the use of bent crystal channelling for beam focusing or cooling is suggested.
