Chapter 12 Field observation and modeling of suspended fine sediment load in Ariake Bay, Japan

Several key parameters for the modeling of fine sediment transport, such as erosion and deposition processes, were extracted from field data of suspended-sediment concentration (SSC) profiles observed in Ariake bay, Japan. The SSC profiles are derived from ADCP acoustic backscatter intensity after calibration with data set of SSC derived from optical backscatter sensors. The field measurement data indicate that the SSCs are dominated by tidal currents during spring tide periods. A simple one-point model has been applied and the tidally dominated total suspended load (TSL) temporal variation was reasonably well simulated.
