Chloride penetration in marine concrete structures after 40 years in service

This paper discusses the variations in chloride ion profiles in reinforced concrete decks of open-type pier after 40 years in service. One beam and three slabs were taken out from the deck of an existing open-piled pier. Through detailed analysis on mechanical properties of the concrete and chloride ion concentration in the concrete, the following topics are particularly discussed: 1) variations in mechanical properties of concrete and chloride ion profiles in concrete; 2) the relationship between apparent diffusion coefficients and surface chloride ion concentrations in concrete and 3) the effect of environmental conditions on chloride ion profiles. As a result, chloride ion profiles in the concrete member showed wide variations. These variations are considered to be brought by the local environmental conditions at the sampling points due to wind, seawater splash, and reflecting waves.
