Condensation and pool boiling of low GWP refrigerants on a horizontal plane tube

    Heat transfer characteristics of low GWP refrigerants R1234ze(E) and R1234ze(Z) on a horizontal smooth tube is investigated in this study. Condensation and pool boiling heat transfer coefficient is experimentally quantified with a horizontal smooth tube of 19.12 mm in outer diameter and 400 mm in heat transfer length. For the condensation at saturation temperatures from 20 to 50 °C and the degrees of wall subcool from 0.98 to 28.81 K, the measured heat transfer coefficients of R134a, R1234ze(E) and R1234ze(Z) agree with that of Nusselt's filmwise condensation theory (1916) within approximately 15%. The heat transfer coefficient of R1234ze(E) is slightly lower than that of R134a and R1234ze(Z). For pool boiling at saturation temperatures from 5 to 50 °C and heat fluxes from 0.45 to 80.13 kW m-2, the measured heat transfer coefficients reasonably agree with that predicted by Cooper (1984), Gorenflo(2010), Ribatski et al. (2003), and Stephan-Abdelsalam (1978).
