Configuration transitions between MDD and spin-polarized pentagonal molecule via lower spin states in a five-electron quantum dot

We compare experimental data and a theoretical picture about the magnetic field evolution of the addition energy for putting the fifth electron onto a quantum dot. We probe the ground state transitions of a maximum density droplet state to a high magnetic field, and find an intermediate state before the next stable state is formed. The observed features are excellently reproduced by the "electron-molecule" picture, which suggests that this intermediate state is a low spin state with a configuration that is a superposition of pentagonal and 'square + center' configurations.
