Control law design for the energy management phase of a winged re-entry vehicle

A control law for the terminal area energy management (TAEM) phase of a winged re-entry vehicle was designed. During the TAEM phase, the dynamics of the vehicle vary considerably because of changes of velocity and altitude. In addition, there is a significant error in the measured value of Mach number, which is used as a scheduling parameter. The multiple delay model and multiple design point (MDM/MDP) approach is a practical method of designing a controller that can operate over a large range of flight conditions. In this paper, the MDM/MDP approach is used to design a gain-scheduled controller and the resulting design is verified by linear stability analysis, linear command response, and nonlinear flight simulation.
