Cytoplasmic transfer between live single cells by achieving transient cytoplasmic connection

We previously developed a microfluidic device which can promote strictured cytoplasmic connection between live single cells by inducing cell fusion through a microslit. The promotion of cytoplasmic connection led to cytoplasmic transfer to the fusion partner; however, many of the fused cells did not recover to two independent cells. In this study, we developed a novel microfluidic device in which microslit was replaced with microtunnel. Cell fusion through a microtunnel resulted in promotion of transient cytoplasmic connection and peroxisome transfer to the fusion partner. The results demonstrate a feasible method for cytoplasmic transfer between live single cells.
