Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) have become popular in tunnel construction industry due to advantages such as high speed advance rate and good stability of underground construction. The efficiency of TBM performance affected by a specific s/p (s: spacing and p: penetration) ratio of the disc cutter is an issue in demand. This paper presents preliminary results of a Discrete Element Method (DEM) analysis for the effective rock cutting conditions. One of the major strength of DEM analysis is its capability to investigate dynamic behavior of the rock fragmentation process despite the limitation of incorporating complex enough heterogeneity of real rock samples into synthetic materials. To overcome this difficulty, a multi-indentation test is simulated with various material properties and cutter dimensions. Our preliminary result shows that the effective rock cutting condition corresponding to the minimum specific energy can b e obtained by the optimum s/p ratio, which is well correlated with the result of the laboratory test.
