Objective: To investigate factors related to depression among caregivers of patients with Parkinson disease. Design: Cross sectional study. Subjects: 70 pairs of family caregivers and outpatients with Parkinson disease followed by one neurologist in two hospitals in Fukuoka-Kitakyushu Metropolitan area in April 2000. Results: 32 (45.7%) of 70 caregivers were depressed. They spent more time with their patients as well as on providing physical care than non-depressed caregivers. They were older and more likely to consult physicians about their own health than non-depressed caregivers. Even after adjusting age of caregivers, they spent more time on providing physical care and were more likely to consult physicians about their own health. Conclusion: Care-managers should care for not only patients with Parkinson disease but also their family caregivers.
