Design study of a 1 GJ class HTS-SMES (1): Conceptual design of a magnet system

The authors have completed a 3.6 MJ/1 MW module-type low Tc superconducting (LTS) SMES named ESK (Experimental SMES of Kyushu Electric Power Co. Inc.) as a full system to be tested on a power line in Fukuoka. Our analysis shows that in order to operate the ESK on a real power system, any SMES with a maximum energy capacity of 1 GJ or more and a maximum output of 100 MW is required. With a view that high Tc superconducting (HTS) magnet could be more compact and stable than LTS coils because the former could operate under a greater strength of magnetic field than the latter, our study focused on toroidal magnet, contributing to reduction of its size, volume and the magnetic force applied to the conductor of a 1 GJ HTS-SMES. The study result revealed that a magnetic field in the range from 10 to 14 T is suitable for designing the magnet.
