Design study of a 3.6 MJ HTS-SMES: Compact magnet design

We conducted a study in order to determine a suitable design for a 3.6 MJ class high-temperature superconducting (HTS) SMES. Magnet size and volume are expected to be reduced by using the HTS since the HTS wire keeps better properties at high magnetic field than does LTS wire. We carried out parameter surveys of the magnetic fields applied to the HTS-SMES magnets, the elemental coil shapes of the magnets and the number of the elemental coils, and studied a suitable magnet dimension. 7-8 T of the maximum magnetic field applied to the magnet and a large number of elemental coils are suitable for a 3.6 MJ HTS magnet.
