Development of an ultrasonic vibration spindle with an aerostatic bearing for micro drilling

The present paper deals with the development of an ultrasonic vibration spindle with an aerostatic bearing, abbreviated as aero-USV spindle, intended to be applied to micro drilling. This aero-USV spindle consists of an aerostatic bearing and an ultrasonic vibration element. The latter element, which includes a piezoelectric transducer and a tool holder with a collet chuck, is held on the node of vibration by the aerostatic spindle. The aerostatic bearing enables to prevent the radial runout of this spindle within 2μm. The radial and axial stiffnesses of the aero-USV spindle are 0.5N/μm and 2.8N/μm respectively. This aero-USV spindle realized good hole quality and thrust reduction in micro deep drilling of duralumin.
