In Japan, Typhoons, strong lightning strikes and mountainous terrains prevent introducing economically advantageous larger turbines. Large number of wind turbines installed in Japan are imported from Europe and designed adaptive to European environments. Because of the differences of environment between Japan and Europe, many troubles have been reported. Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. and Hitachi Ltd. have jointly developed a new 2 MW wind turbine "SUBARU 80/2.0" as countermeasures against this issue. The configuration of "SUBARU 80/2.0" is downwind turbine that can adapt to Japanese circumstances. This paper explains Japanese particular environments, the background of downwind turbine development and demonstration status up to today.
