Diacetylene organogels: Control of effective conjugation length towards construction of made-to-order conductive materials

Governance of effective conjugation length by molecular design is very challenging work from the viewpoint of controlling conductivity. Novel diacetylene organogelators (1-a∼d) were designed and synthesized. We can efficiently tune the polymer's effective conjugation length by incorporating subtle changes in the alkyl chain length. UV-vis spectra demonstrate an interesting odd-even effect due to the different alkyl-chain lengths. AFM observation supports the production of longer polymers than estimated effective conjugation length. These polymers are anticipated to hold promise as they are comprised of different functionality in 1-a and 1-b respectively.
