In this study, we examine the profound relationship between information and communication technologies (ICT) and the socially reclusive Hikikomori people in Japan. Adopting an ecosystem approach and through the lens of boundary spanning practice, we reveal the collective actions of stakeholders in an increasingly digital ecosystem and dynamic landscape to uncover how ICT enables the conditions and treatments of the Hikikomori. Our ongoing investigations and contribution shed new light on the significance of a digital ecosystem and the action of its stakeholders to support the rehabilitation and employment of the socially reclusive. The findings on ICT and pervasive social phenomena in Japan have wide implications. For theory and practice, this empirical investigation reveals lessons on the ambivalent impact of ICT and societal challenges including mental health and employment.
