Iron carburization is one of the most important reactions in iron-making process. This reaction directly influences airflow resistance at cohesive zone in blast furnace because it plays a great role in melting behavior of ore layer. If the rate and efficiency of carburization reaction are increased, energy consumption of the process will be reduced to large extent. The purpose of this study is to clarify the effect of carbon structure on iron carburization behavior. Samples of different carbon structures were prepared by heat treatment of carbon blacks at various temperatures. Estimations of carbon structure about prepared carbon samples done by a Raman spectroscopy. For carburization experiment, high-purity iron samples directly-contacted by the carbon were prepared. A Laser microscope combined with an infrared image furnace was used for heating of the sample and observation of carburization phenomena, and carbon profile in iron sample was analyzed by EPMA. From results of this work, it was indicated that the carburization by the lower crystallization degree of carbon structure causes formation of primary Fe-C liquid at the lower temperature.
