Effect of grain diameter and residual austenite phase on the fracture behavior of Ni-bearing steels

Using 2.5 % Ni and 9 % Ni steels, the effects of refinement of grain diameter and the amount of austenite precipitated on toughness were studied. The experimental results indicated that 1) ductile-brittle transition temperature which is estimated by the Charpy V notch test, lowers and crack arrestability, Kca, increases with the refinement of ferrite grain diameter for 2.5 % Ni steel, and 2) the austenite precipitated decreases the Charpy ductile fracture energy of 9 % Ni steel by formation of smaller dimples.
