Effect of hydrogen gas environment On fatigue crack growth of FSW joints of A6061-T6 aluminum alloy

In order to investigate the effects of hydrogen on the fatigue crack growth characteristics of Friction Stir Welded (FSW) joints of A6061-T6 aluminum alloy, bending fatigue tests were carried out on the specimen with small blind holes in a low pressure hydrogen gas environment. The fatigue crack growth life of an FSW joint in hydrogen gas is shorter than that in nitrogen gas and is roughly as long as that of the base material in hydrogen gas. However, the fatigue crack growth rate of the FSW joint specimen in earlier stage of crack growth is more enhanced by hydrogen than that of the base material.
