Effects of trace impurities in hydrogen environment on tribological properties of steels

    Effects of small amount of impurities contained in hydrogen gas on tribological behaviors of some steels were investigated. A pin-on-disk apparatus equipped with double sealed chambers was employed to conduct sliding tests in hydrogen environment A hardened chromium steel and austenitic stainless steels, i.e. JIS SUJ2, SUS316, and SUS316L were selected as materials for specimens because they are popularly used in the components in hydrogen gas facilities. SUS316L after vacuum arc re-melting treatment was also prepared so as to compare with SUS316L to know the influences of small amount ingredients. The notable changes in tribological properties were found when water concentration which represented impurities increased from a few tens to several hundreds of ppm and the modes of the changes varied depending on the type of steel. The results suggested oxygen and/or water affected formation and adhesion of oxidized substances on the SUJ2 disk surface, which facilitated wear of the pin, while friction and wear of SUS316 and SUS316L were affected by prevention of adhesion between solids by oxygen and/or water.
