Purpose: To study cases of epithelial tumor of the lacrimal gland at Kyushu University over the past 11 years. Methods: We retrospectively studied 18 cases of epithelial tumor of the lacrimal gland that were resected in the Department of Ophthalmology at Kyushu University between January 1991 and December 2001. Results: The tumor types included 8 pleomorphic adenomas (2 males, 6 females), 5 adenoid cystic carcinomas (4 males, 1 female), and 3 adenocarcinomas (1 male, 2 females). There was 1 case of carcinoma (in a male patient) derived from a pleomorphic adenoma and 1 case of undifferentiated carcinoma (in a male patient). One of the pleomorphic adenomas recurred, requiring reoperation. Five of the 10 malignant tumors recurred or metastasized an average of 17 months after the initial operation. Three patients lived for 34 to 36 months (average 35 months) after the initial tumor resection. Conclusions: Malignant tumors count approximately half of the epithelial tumors of the lacrimal gland and approximately a third of the malignant tumors are fatal despite resection.
