The elastic scattering of 56 MeV polarized deuterons over a wide mass region has been investigated. The target nuclei were ^{16}O, ^{24}Mg, ^{28}Si, ^{32}S, ^{40}Ar, ^{40, 44}Ca, ^{54}Fe, ^{58, 60, 64}Ni, ^{90}Zr, ^{118}Sn and ^{208}Pb. Angular distributions of the cross section and vector analyzing power A_{y} have been measured for all target nuclei. The tensor analyzing power A_{yy} has also been studied, except for ^{24}Mg and ^{28}Si. The optical-model parameters were derived from an analysis including no tensor potentials. Volume integrals for the real and imaginary parts of the central potential and the spin-orbit interaction were calculated and compared with the folding-model predictions. The effect of a complex T_{R} potential was studied. It was found that the real part of the T_{R} potential tends to be zero for all the nuclei studied and the inclusion of the imaginary part improves the fit to the tensor analyzing power.
