A periodic-striped pattern was induced in the nematic composites including a small amount of a liquid crystalline polymer by applying an electric field in the direction perpendicular to the substrate surface of the cell in which the molecules were uniaxially oriented in the plane by rubbing treatment. The striped pattern is assumed to be formed by field-induced director rotation in opposite senses. After removing the electric field, the striped pattern was persisted by a pinning effect of the polymer. The period of the striped pattern increased linearly with cell thickness. The result indicates that there is a strong correlation between the director distortions out of-plane and in-plane.
