The structure of new hydrogen storage electrodes, consisting of TiMn//x (x equals 0. 5 to about 1. 75) and a binder, and their electrochemical properties are described. Powdered Ti-Mn alloys were sintered with Ni powder used as a binder. When the electrode potential is higher than minus 1. 075 V vs. Ag/AgCl, Ni is inactive and does not take part in the electrode reaction. The electrodes can be activated by repeating about 10 cycles of cathodic and anodic electrolysis. The amount of absorbed hydrogen increases with decrease of Mn content. Because of the large current capacity, Ti-Mn promises to be an excellent electrode for a battery with high energy density.
