N2 - Epilepsy is a common disease with a high incidence of about one percent Knowledge of seizure semiology and correct reading of EEG findings are important for diagnosis of epilepsy. Because the primary therapy for epilepsy is antiepileptic drugs (AEDs), including several ones that are newly permitted in Japan, we need to prescribe them based on an understanding of their actions and interaction mechanisms. However, we also need to consider early surgical treatment for temporal lobe epilepsy with hippocampal sclerosis. In the therapeutic decision for adult epilepsy patients many factors such as employment, marriage, child bearing, and co-existent disease need to be considered. The present review provides an overview of the basis of epilepsy practice for neurologists treating adults with epilepsy, including a discussion of new AEDs, epilepsy surgery, women with epilepsy, and epilepsy in the elderly.
