Epoxy-clay nanocomposites using polybenzoxazine as a curing agent

Novel nanocomposites have been prepared from the blending of epoxy resin, benzoxazine monomer and stearyl ammonium modified-montmorillonite. The featureless XRD pattern suggests the disordered dispersion of the clay nanolayers into the epoxy/polybenzoxazine copolymer. The Tgs of the hybrid materials were higher than that of the pristine resin. Consequently, the storage modulii of the hybrid materials were maintained up to a higher temperature than the pristine copolymer. The hardness of the nanocomposites increased with the inclusion of clay accompanied with a decrease in the toughness. TGA showed that the thermal stability of the nanocomposites increased over the pure copolymer.
