Erosion and gas impurity emission of B4C converted CFC by high heat load

High heat loading experiments using an electron beam were carried out to evaluate the high heat load resistance of B4C converted CFC in the view point of materials damage and emission of gases and particles. The surface temperature of the B4C convened CFC during the electron beam irradiation was higher than that of CFC. On the other hand, degradation of vacuum pressure for the B4C converted CFC was about 1/5 of that of the CFC. Peak of partial pressure of H2O and CO2 for the B4C converted CFC was 1/5 and 1/10 of that for the CFC, respectively. Melting of surface layer of B4C resulted in decrease of the vacuum pressure compared with that of before the irradiation. This means that getter effect due to evaporated B occurred. The present results suggest that a B/C ratio and thickness of B4C layer should be optimized to control the surface temperature increase by heat load.
