Estimation of Properties of Narrow Boiling Range Coal-Derived Liquids from the 150 ton/day NEDOL Coal Liquefaction Pilot Plant

Properties of coal-derived liquids were studied for proper scale-up design of the NEDOL demonstration plant from the 150 ton/day capacity pilot plant. Empirical and semiempirical equations to estimate intrinsic, thermodynamic, and transport properties were formulated on the basis of observed results in pilot plant operation together with existing studies for characterization of narrow boiling-point range distillates obtained by superfractionation. The properties of coal-derived liquids in pilot plant differ from those in 1 ton/day process supporting unit. It was suggested that, for design of industrial coal liquefaction process, it was necessary to obtain engineering data under conditions where the process recycling liquids have attained equilibrium in the process after a sufficiently long term run.
