Evaluation of seismic performance of highway bridges considering the ultimate behavior of rubber bearings

After the Kobe earthquake, adoption of natural rubber bearings for highway bridges was increased. However, several natural rubber bearings of viaducts in the Tohoku district were fractured as a result of the 2011 earthquake off the Pacific coast of Tohoku which occurred on March 11th. In this research, a three span continuous plate girder bridge with reinforced concrete piers was selected as a structure for examination. Natural rubber bearings were set up on the top of each pier. Hardening and fracture of natural rubber bearings were considered in the analytical model. The observed record of the nearest point to the damaged highway bridge in Sendai was selected as the seismic input motion. In past research, the response of the bridge in the longitudinal direction was investigated. Therefore, the dynamic response of the bridge in the transversal direction was the main focus in this research. From the results of the dynamic response analysis of the bridge, it was confirmed that an increase of the relative displacement in the natural rubber bearings depends on the fractured bearings in the transversal direction. The progress of the fracture of natural rubber bearings and the torsional motion of the girder of the bridge were verified. The response of the highway bridge, considering hardening and fracture of the natural rubber bearings, was elucidated.
