Experimental evidence for grain-boundary sliding in ultrafine-grained aluminum processed by severe plastic deformation

    Grain-boundary sliding in ultrafine-grained aluminum to examine material processing by severe plastic deformation (SPD), was described. It was proposed that sliding occurred in these materials by the movement of extrinsic dislocations along the boundary. The observations suggested that new deformation processes become important not only in materials having grain-sizes but also in materials having sub-micrometer grain sizes. The results show that grain-boundary sliding is a viable deformation process in ultrafine-grained metals processed by SPDoccurrenceoccurence of sliding provides an explanation for the reasonable ductility.
