Experimental study of cavitating flow in flat plate cascades with/without tip clearance

For deeper understanding of cavitation instabilities arising in turbopumps, we have started an experimental study on unsteady cavitating flows in flat plate cascades. Visual observations using high-speed video cameras as well as pressure fluctuation measurements of the unsteady cavitating flow were carried out in decelerating cascades with the solidity of 1.0 and 2.0. In this paper, we describe the relationship between pressure recovery performance of tested cascades with the cavity patterns in detail. Effects of the tip clearance and the tip leakage vortex cavity are also examined. Finally, frequency analyses of pressure fluctuations are shown to discuss the unsteadiness of cavitating flow in the cascades.
