This paper describes a novel technique to measure gas transportation across narrow gap between rotary shaft seals and rotating shafts. A new test apparatus developed enables quantitative determination of the volume of gas that moves from the air side of the seal to the sump side while the shaft is rotating with gas chromatography. A standard plain lip seal, a synthetic oil, and several gases including helium, hydrogen and dry air are used in preliminary tests. Test results show that gas pump rates increase with shaft speed from 0.1 to 1 ml/h and there is little influence of these gases on the gas pump rates.
